The New Blogged Word has been a wonderful experiment. It has taught me many things about blogging and exposed me to people all over the world. Along with the first incarnation (The Blogged Word) it was my first blogging property, but after 99 posts, this 100th post seems appropriate to announce a new project.

OREGONative

One of central themes experts preach is to blog about your passion. The (New) Blogged Word was a starting point, but over time, I've continued to search for that one passion that I could get excited about. I have another key project in the works, but OREGONative is a natural evolution as someone who is... well... an OREGONative.

You'll get perspectives on the Ducks (sorry, Beaver fans), Blazers, Winterhawks and more. I'll pretend to know what I'm talking about regarding politics and weigh in on issues related to the environment, renewable energy and anything else that surfaces. There will likely be some occasional commentary on a certain blogger's countdown to retirement.

Credit Card Compromised

It is quite ironic that after a long absence from updating The New Blogged Word, the topic today falls immediately on the heels of an identity theft topic.

No, at least at this point, it does not look as if our identity has been stolen, but we did have our credit card number compromised. We have our cards, but when checking our balance through the automated phone system today, we found over $17,000 in charges!

A quick call to our credit card provider began the process of clearing things up. Flights, travel services in Istanbul and England, utilities, and dozens of other random charges. The charges had been taking place for days and continuing today - during our call - when the agent deactivated our account. New cards, with new numbers are on the way.

This caused me to look for some resources on Amazon, just in case I needed to dig deeper. Much to my chagrin, I found an enormous collection, at the time of this writing, 849 results, related to Identity Theft Resources!

Whether you buy a book from Amazon, or subscribe to an identity theft prevention service, be very careful about your credit card use. Something as innocent has handing it to a waiter, who takes it out of sight to process, may be just what you don't need!

Identity Theft Precautions

Colleagues shared this at work recently and many of these suggestions make a lot of sense. The sad part is that not too many years ago, we didn't have to worry about, nor did we even think about, these kinds of things. I've been using some of these myself, but see some new ones I'll add to my defenses.

I hope you find them useful. Feel free to add any of your own techniques!

The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.
Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED" or "PLEASE CHECK I.D."
When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "MEMO" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.
Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a P.O. Box, use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, get one and have all mail sent there. Mailbox theft is growing!
Never have your Social Security Number printed on your checks. You can selectively provide it based on the circumstance. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.
Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopies safe. Always carry a photocopy of your passport when you travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.
If you have access to your email via the Internet, scan and email yourself the contact information copied above. If you're traveling and disaster strikes, you can access all of this information just by locating the nearest Internet cafe.

These are great precautions, but if your personal identity information has been compromised, here's some things to do to help limit the damage:

Common wisdom is to cancel credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.
File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one.)
Call the three national credit reporting organizations (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. A dangerous application for credit made over the Internet in your name can be stopped in its tracks with this alert on your accounts. This requires the agencies to contact you via phone to authorize new credit.

Memorable Merchant(s) - TryLocalFirst.org

Usually, when I share experiences in Memorable Merchants, it is pertaining to a single merchant. Today, it makes sense to focus on a group of local Gresham merchants that are trying to make a significant difference in our community.

Try Local First is a coalition of local business groups, launched by the Gresham Chamber of Commerce to urge East County citizens to support our own quality of life by supporting local businesses. To their credit, check out the Try Local First banner in the rotation at the bottom of their home page.

The coalition's premise is based on a simple economic concept: spend money locally, and the money stays in the local community longer and does more good than dollars that are sent outside the area, state, or country.

Bravo!

If you are an East County business owner - get involved. If you are an East County resident, look for the Try Local First placards in local businesses. At a minimum, look to our local merchants FIRST every time you shop.

Memorable Merchant - ShedRain Umbrellas

How often do you use a product for 14 years, have it fail (wear out, actually), inquire skeptically about the so called "Lifetime Warranty" and be taken care of without a single question asked?

Yes, I'm amazed, too.

ShedRain is a third-generation Oregon company founded in 1947. With a name like ShedRain, what else does an Oregon company make? Umbrellas, of course! And quality ones at that. Remember the 14 year statement?

When my wife's umbrella finally gave up, I called to find out about the Lifetime Warranty. Helpful-Warranty-Manager-Brandy said bring it in and they would take a look at it. So I did. Again, without any questioning, she cheerfully accepted the umbrella for inspection. Brandy indicated that within a week or so, she would have a decision on whether it could be repaired or if they will need to replace it.

Replace it? Again, I point out 14 years!

Friends and family are likely tired of the frequent story I tell about my first visit to a Les Schwab Tire Center years ago with a nail in my tire. When I tried to pay for the repair, they said "no charge." When I asked why, they said that it looked as it I would be needing tires in the near future and that they would appreciate it if I thought of them. Are you kidding? Since that day, I've never gone anywhere else.

From this day forward, I will never buy an umbrella from any manufacturer other than ShedRain. I suggest you do the same.

There is a new wine being developed just for seniors. Vintners in California's Napa Valley, which primarily produce Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Grigio wines have developed a new hybrid grape that acts as an "anti-diuretic.”

It is an extraordinary breakthrough that has not only the wine industry, but the medical community taking notice.

Gresham-Barlow School District Reinstates Golf

Community-driven fundraising throughout the school year allows district to bring program back for 2009-2010 school year.

The Gresham-Barlow School Board reinstated the district's high school golf program after a series of successful fundraisers brought in $15,600 to pay for the program. The sport had been suspended for the 2009-2010 school year as a part of the school district's efforts to reduce the co-curricular budget.

"I am pleased our student athletes will have the opportunity to participate in this co-curricular program in spite of our budget challenges," said Superintendent John Miner. "The community support that has been shown for our students is truly appreciated."

High school golf coaches Ron Jones, Tom Starr, Jeff Nielson, and Scott Shields led the fundraising efforts. Student Tommy Schmitz, who plays on Barlow's golf team, raised almost $8,000 through a golf scramble fundraiser he conducted.

Golf is the second sports program to be reinstated. At the beginning of the school year, a community member anonymously donated $21,000 to restore the water polo program. The district was forced to reduce its co-curricular budget by $500,000 this school year due to reduced state funding. A majority of the cuts came at the middle school level. Cuts to the co-curricular program were part of an $11 million reduction to

the district's entire budget for the 2009-2010 school year.

Safeway Grounds United Airlines

Today was the first day that I did not swipe my Safeway card when picking up my regular Starbucks purchase. Effective February 28, Safeway has canceled the long-running United Airlines frequent-flyer program tied to their Safeway Club Card.

In a recent announcement, the move was to focus on reducing prices for ALL shoppers. Not a bad move. Safeway has been higher priced on many items for years. Me? I pick up a few things along with my Starbucks purchases as needed.

It was only to get the miles.

For years, Safeway has awarded to Club Card holders who sign up for the United Mileage Plus Reward program 125 miles for every $250 spent on qualifying merchandise. Will that get me to Fiji? I think not. Does that make me feel like I'm getting something for my loyalty? Absolutely!

The irony in removing a frequent flier program actually runs contrary to the "frequent buyer" mentality. I don't expect to buy my odds and ends there any longer since there is no benefit. My wife does almost 100% of her shopping at Fred Meyer where there is a direct gift card rebate quarterly - and she gets gas discounts.

Starbucks recently initiated their Starbucks Rewards program, seeing the value in rewarding loyalty as McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, and now Burger King continue to provide competition.

In a competitive grocery environment, Safeway may believe they are becoming more competitive, but I would argue they are looking in the wrong places. I can go on and on about process improvement, lean operations and the like - areas where real and significant costs can be engineered out. Sure, it costs Safeway to "buy" the miles United awards, but that is a coveted benefit I will miss.

I would speculate that after a recent request to have Club Card holders "renew" their participation in the program, they may not have had a large number take that action. Again, asking a participating member to "renew" when they can see who are members and how many use the program, seems misguided. They simply don't get it.

I do see one benefit, though: my wallet is now one card lighter!

Gresham-Barlow Phone-a-Thon February 22-25

The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation is a group of tireless volunteers and donors who give of themselves year round for the benefit of our District's students. They have been strong partners and supporters of the Gresham-Barlow School District since they were founded in 1994. Now, they need your help to help them continue their work.

In the press release that follows, you'll see the formal announcement of the 2010 Phone-A-Thon taking place February 22-25. This year's "Learning to Read" campaign continues their focus on providing additional support for reading skills in the elementary grades.

How the Phone-A-Thon works:

High school students make outgoing calls to members of our community requesting donations. With the Gresham Outlook and Gresham Ford sponsoring the event and covering all costs, all donations received from the high school students' phone calls go entirely to the reading programs.

All costs? What costs are there?

The students making the calls are all part of various high school activity groups. The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation provides a small grant to each of the groups who field calls as a way to support their activities. Combine this with some refreshments (after all, we are talking high school students!) and other supplies, and you can see that it takes some money to make some money. With the generous sponsors who are covering those costs, every "telephone dollar" supports reading.

If you are in the Gresham-Barlow School District attendance area, please give what you can when you receive the call. Every dollar helps. Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation's seventh annual Phone-A-Thon to raise funds to help students become better readers

February 22-25 the Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation will hold a Phone-A-Thon for the Foundation's "Learning to Read" 2010 campaign. During the four-day event, students from the district's high schools will call parents and community members asking for donations to the campaign. Donations will be primarily used to provide support for elementary students learning to read. The event also provides a fundraising opportunity for high school student groups.

Last year, parents and community members in the school district raised $40,000 for the reading campaign. The Gresham Outlook and Gresham Ford are sponsoring the event. Individuals donating $50 or more will receive a certificate for a free oil change from Gresham Ford. Community members can visit the website www.gbefkids.org to make a pledge.

The Gresham-Barlow School District serves more than 11,000 students in grades K-12. The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation was formed in 1994
to assist the schools of the district in providing the best possible educational opportunities for its students.

America Can't Get Enough of Sully

It's been a year since Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger acted calm under pressure, relied on his training, showed leadership acting as a team with a very capable co-pilot, Jeffrey Skiles, and successfully put US Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River in New York after a bird strike during takeoff. "Cactus" 1549, as the air traffic controllers called it, had 155 passengers on board and except for a few bumps and bruises - and quite a scare - were no worse for wear.

In this Associated Press photo, many of the members of that short flight gathered Friday to commemorate the event's anniversary. And who (rightfully) was center to the proceedings? Sully.

Captain Sullenberger has been on the speaking tour, he has written a book and others have written about the event, and has become something of an icon.

In these days of irresponsible Hollywood types that get press for extreme misbehaving (the topic of another RANT! some day), Sully is a breath of fresh air. The right kind of media topic we can enjoy seeing plastered everywhere.

My favorite example of what has come out of this event is a computer reenactment of the flight, complete with bird strike and air traffic control audio. Exoshpere3D is a "visualization" company that used the released information from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report.

I can't stop watching it. Take the time to allow it to load in HD and watch in full screen mode. If you are a pilot or have even a slight fascination with our our air traffic control system works, you may not be able to stop either.

Starbucks Responding to Incentives

It has been a while since I posted a Memorable Merchant, but I was so pleasantly surprised recently during a Starbucks visit, I had to dust it off.

While hanging out waiting for the girls to finish shopping a while back, I ran across a brochure talking about a relatively new program called My Starbucks Rewards. Although I'm a loyal Starbucks customer, I did not know about this until now since my regular visits are at my local Safeway Starbucks kiosk and not a physical store. The current program is a nice evolution to something actually started in the past.

In the past, Starbucks had various forms of rewards programs that included the use of their Visa card to track purchases. Believing that one credit card and a debit card are all the plastic I need, along with no doubt countless other customers, Starbucks saw the wisdom in not requiring a proprietary Visa and combined the program.

They did it right.

Now (and long overdue,) Starbucks is tracking purchases via registered gift cards, using the typical "frequent flier" model: the more you use it, the better the rewards. The only change in my habits is the use of a gift card (and regular re-loads.) Three levels exist:

Welcome (black; beginner): free drink on your birthday; 2 free continuous hours wi-fi access
Green (5 stars earned): Black level rewards; free beverage customization (syrup and milk options/soy); free refills on brewed or iced coffee; free beverage with whole bean purchase; free trial offers
Gold (30 stars earned): Green level rewards; free drink every 15 stars; personalized gold card; personalized offers and coupons

Being someone who is always in the hunt for "miles," I appreciate getting credit for my purchases. It is interesting though (and a testament to Starbucks' dominance in the past,) that they are only in the recent past, becoming "competitive." As recent as only a couple of years ago, they told Safeway to stop the "buy 7 and get one free" promotion as part of the Safeway Club Card. The message: we don't need to entice people to drink our brew.

That has changed.

My economics professor in college, Dr. Ted Scheinmann, used to say, "people respond to incentives." I quote him often since it is not only his, but the overall basic axiom of economics. Starbucks originally (and for some time) had people responding just because they could afford expensive, but very enjoyable drinks, in very pleasant environments. As competition has tightened from the likes of McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts (another good thing for consumers from an economics point of view,) Starbucks has needed to employ Dr. Scheinmann's axiom to keep customers responding.

It's working for me. Since the sign-up via Blackberry from the "shopping" Starbucks, I have seven stars. I'll be Gold in just 23 more. Safeway kiosks aren't equipped to deliver the "rewards," but my everyday purchases count as stars. At my pace, that's only about a month.

Memorable Merchant: New Choice Health

I know, you're thinking I'm going to pitch the merits of some insurance company. Blah, blah, they paid everything, blah, blah, blah.

Nope.

I learned about New Choice Health today from a podcast on NPR's Planet Money. NewChoiceHealth, Inc. is a leading online comparison shopping marketplace built for the sole purpose of providing healthcare consumers a way to save money. Consumers can easily locate medical facilities and compare medical procedure costs for common procedures such as MRIs, CT Scans, Mammograms, and more. You can shop nationwide or right in your own local market from over 20,000 medical facilities for over 400 of the most commonly performed medical procedures.

The podcast's topic was related to health care and why hospitals charge so much. That's a big bucket and a topic all by itself for another time. The part that struck me was the ease at which the average patient (consumer) can shop for medical services using NewChoiceHealth.com.

First some background about the founder. From their About Us page:

As I said before, the overall cost of health care is a topic for another day. But I need to make an important point. Many of us are fortunate enough to have insurance coverage, and our out of pocket costs for a procedure like this is small, relative to the published prices. Because of that insurance, we simply don't have a good feel for what something costs. Frankly, I was shocked to know the cost - and the range of costs.

For everyone thinking about any sort of medical procedure (even you, "Perfect Specimen John,") shop around. You will likely save yourself some money. For those procedures covered by insurance, the more we take action to reduce costs, the more competition there will be, and the lower costs will become. Economics 101 - yet another topic for another day.

Recently, I added two badges to my sidebar, sharing my other blogging properties. There was a period of time recently where all of my blogging activities ceased. As I've refocused on my existing blogs - and have begun designing a new one - I have taken some steps to promote them by making them more visible. In this case, it's creating their own badges.

The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit is a place where I've been documenting my experiences blogging. As the badge indicates, it is a place for Free Blog Reviews, Blogging Resources and of course, Rhetoric.

Energication is a relatively new effort, tying into my past experience as a school board member. Here, I attempt to connect the many aspects of renewable energy to their application in our schools. Making the critical nature of renewable energy sources, the science behind them, and the impacts to our society relevant to students and educators at all levels is the number one priority. This Welcome post provides the best background and Energication To Date provides an easy way to start at the beginning and walk your way to the present.

After wrestling the graphic down to the ground, avoiding all the popups, it became personal. Just had to use it.

Dr. Seuss Knows a Thing or Two About Aging

If you've read the New Blogged Word for any length of time, you know I post a periodic Retirement Countdown entry once in a while. This doesn't really qualify, but it is fun.

A friend sent this to me recently and I just had to share it. In addition to the good doctor providing a clear assessment of the aging picture, here's a few more facts that may or may not help:

The people who started college this past fall were born in 1990.
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
The CD was introduced two years before they were born.
They have always had an answering machine.
They have always had cable.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show (until recently.)
Popcorn has always been microwaved.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane Boss, de plane."
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Damn kids. :-)

A Legal Christmas

A colleague of mine sent a nice holiday greeting over email recently and at the end of a very nice sentiment, he included a very appropriate CYA version that gave me a good laugh. Agave Azul

New restaurants come and go, but occasionally one comes along that you really wish could stay. Agave Azul had a brief mention in a recent edition of the Oregonian and the "healthy selections" part caught my eye.

I can only speak for the chicken fajitas - that's what Margaret and I each ordered. (Of course there was a margarita and a glass of wine involved.)

Our new friend, Maria brought the fajitas to the table with the requisite sizzling pan, but when we dug in, we were both surprised - no grease. When I pointed that out, Maria said simply, "we use wine instead!"

If you can't read the graphic, they are in Gresham (of course) just off Powell on Vista, near 242nd. Treat yourself to a friendly atmosphere and wonderfully light fajitas!

The Cruise!

Yes, you eagle-eyed readers are right - it has been some time since I've blogged. Mea culpa! Won't bore you with the details, other than a pledge to get back at it.

What has caused me to get off the dime is a commitment I made to some new friends while on our Caribbean Cruise. After trying to determine how I was going to email videos of our Zip Line tour of the jungle in Belize, I realized this may be the easiest. Since the file sizes are much larger than most email systems can handle, it's merely sending a link to this post.

First, my new friend Les. We had to do some quick planning to make sure we had the camera on the "receiving" platform to get each of us landing. Here's my videography of his "zipography:"

Next, is someone who I am sorry to say, I don't know her name. However, her landing was one we shall all remember. It looks pretty "contained" in this video, but I assure you, it was a bit more "exciting" as she was coming to a stop. Enjoy your movie role!

Last, but not least: me. Les and I were quick enough to swap the camera to that we could get each other in our starring roles. And I mean quick! As you've seen, it didn't take long to get hooked in, zip, unhooked, and off to the next platform. We had to do some creative sequencing with some of our fellow zippers to buy some time between zips, but as Larry the Cable Guy might say, we "got 'er done!"

Les and I decided that when we retire and take over the tourist trade in Belize, we would keep the long bus ride, keep the lunch (not bad, actually), keep Mel (Melanie) as the tour guide, but we would absolutely do the Zipline loop 20 or 30 times (well, maybe 2 or 3) before the long ride back.

727 - Two Years and Counting

After blowing past the "two years left until my retirement-eligible target" of August 1, I'm realizing just how fast time is traveling. It seems that in spite of frequent attention being paid to the remaining time, the pace is indeed accelerating. I'm thinking this is both good and bad.

A quickened pace leading to retirement gets to that emotional "nirvana" more quickly, alleviating the "can't wait 'til Christmas" feeling that we all had (have!) as kids. I'm excited to get there and want the waiting time to be short.

But there are drawbacks to the quick pace I'm beginning to experience.

First, there's the very real need to transform the old 201(k) back into a 401(k) to put the retirement funding back on track. You're saying, "time doesn't really go faster or slower, it's just a perception; you really have two years left, no matter how fast it 'seems' to be going."

Agreed.

But with the perception that time is actually going faster, I must be on guard to fight the urge to "catch up" the investment funds too quickly through poor decisions. Stay the course. Make careful choices.

There's another, more deeply emotional aspect of time going quickly: relationships. If I choose to retire on Day 0 (remember, at that point in time I may "choose" to work, as opposed to being "required" to do so), I will be leaving a career-long connection to my professional family. I don't take this concept lightly. My employer of now nearly 31 years has in it a unique and cherished family feel that is quite unusual in what would be a Fortune 600 or 700 company. Large organizations don't always foster that type of close-knit feeling.

I won't even get into the impact I will have on my wife when I retire. Reduced stress for me, but heightened stress for her. Having me around every day won't necessarily be a cake walk. This could be the basis for a whole series of posts by itself!

For now, I will continue to enjoy the Retirement Countdown experience due to (or in spite of) the seemingly quickened pace. Have you experienced these feelings? How did you deal with it? If you're still a long way away from retirement, how do my perspectives affect yours?

Casual Friday Inflation

What is it with "Casual" Fridays any more? Don't people have pride in their appearance, their roles in their organization, or even the organization itself? As with most other aspects of our economy, inflation seems to have affected the way many people dress on the last day of the work week. What used to be grubby is now considered casual and what was casual is now business casual - at least through the eyes of some.

I remember when Casual Friday in most companies meant, "lose the tie." At my employer, that wasn't actually the case because we didn't have Casual Friday. It was "tie day" every day. However, in June of 2001, my employer changed to "casual business attire" which meant losing the tie completely, unless of course if there was an event or visitor that warranted a knot. The quote from our CEO's email announcement:

"As another step toward making our company a more open and congenial place in which to work, I would like to announce a change in the dress code -- to casual business attire (which of course, does not mean sneakers, jeans and shorts.)"

Now, I have not seen shorts (unless you include women's Capri pants), but I have seen my share of sneakers and jeans, many of which have seen their own share of miles traveled. I just don't get it. We (and I use the collective "we") strive to be treated like professionals. We complain when we are not respected as valued members of the organization. Then on Fridays, instead of tastefully dressing down to "casual business attire," we act as if we are about to change the oil in our cars.

If this is what people wear to work on Fridays, what do they put on to become more casual at home? If the proportions hold true, that level of "casual" would allow them a second job of standing on the freeway off-ramp with a cardboard sign, indicating, "will work for good clothes."

I'm sorry, but keep the slacks, keep the dress shoes and keep the collared shirts. Lose the jeans.

Philadelphians Group Tours

It is always a pleasure to learn something new about a friend. I've been playing tennis with Grant Beldin for several years and never really knew about his company, Philadelphians Group Tours. I'd always heard bits and pieces, but never actually put two and two together. Until just recently.

Grant and his wife, Marilyn own and operate Philadelphians Group Tours, Inc. They have been creating and hosting non-smoking Christian tours since 1980 and here I am just finding out! Their tours are selected with seniors in mind and delivered in a caring and comfortable way.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have not enjoyed one of their tours myself. But I have a different perspective. A perspective most clients don't get to see. I see in Grant a caring, humorous, family-oriented gentleman. If just half of the personality I've known for years comes through in his tours, you're in for a treat.

The conversation I had with him recently that educated me about PGTI painted the picture of detail-oriented planning, the utmost concern for the guests' comfort and safety, and an overall feeling of him truly being a part of ever group he hosts. Not a bad way to travel.

YMCA Camp Collins

Summer Camp.

Just these two words conjures up a time when nothing else really matters, September and the start of school is a lifetime away and kids can just be kids. Unfortunately, that isn't often enough these days. Although I didn't enjoy summer camp as a kid, I have been fortunate to be exposed to its virtues in a number of ways since then.

In this area of the country, many 6th graders enjoy "Outdoor School." They spend a week during the school year attending a summer camp along with their teachers and spend an environmentally educational week. For many, it's the first time away from home alone.

Outdoor School didn't yet exist when I was a 6th grader, but I had the chance to be a counselor when I was a senior in high school. All the best of summer camp and more rewarding at the same time.

Then, Daughter Collette went to Camp Collins as a 1st grader. Six years old and a camper for life. On the banks of the Sandy River east of Gresham, Oregon, Camp Collins is the ultimate location. Sitting in a horseshoe bend in the river, it makes it easy to ride the river in an inner tube and not travel far from your base.

But tubing is a small fraction of the benefits that come with a stay at Camp Collins. First of all, your stay will include my 21 year old as the Arts and Crafts Director. Yes, a camper for life. The video above should be your first clue why she's a camper for life and I take every chance I get to visit camp. Add horses, archery, a climbing tower, a ropes course, songs, nonsense, well... you get the idea. Oregon Food Bank Volunteer Day

A primary responsibility we have collectively as a civil and just society with so much available to us is to help fellow citizens in need. One way to do that is through support of a very basic need: food.

There are many ways to help provide food to those who need the assistance. Food, cash and in-kind donations to your local food bank are just a few. One enjoyable and very needed form of support is your muscle. Individuals in the local Portland, Oregon area are invited to exercise that muscle at the Oregon Food Bank.

Our company is planning a Volunteer Day to work in the Volunteer Action Center. There, 75 of us will repack bulk food into individual and family-sized portions. Bulk foods can range from rice, to beans, to well... just about anything. It will be a great time, helping a great organization do great things for people all around the state.

If you, your family, or your colleagues at work are interested in having some fun, contact the Oregon Food Bank and sign up for a Volunteer Day. Everyone is welcome - even children at least six years old. A Youth Release Form will need to be completed for volunteers under 18 along with the appropriate supervision.

Exercise your philanthropic muscle. It will only cost you a few hours and a short drive to the Oregon Food Bank.

Energication for Renewable Energy Education

The New Blogged Word has been my tool for "casual blogging." Items of more general interest live here, while topics about what I'm learning about blogging reside at The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit. These will continue to be a places to share my perspectives, but I also want to share the result of two other passions: renewable energy and education.

First, education.

For the last eight years, I've been a school board member. A lot of work, but a very rewarding experience.

Now, renewable energy.

As a self-proclaimed solar geek, I'm always looking for innovative and successful uses of solar technology. Taking a page from the school district's math initiative, I put two and two together - and got Energication.

The combination of Renewable Energy and Education, "Energication" is my latest project bringing information of value to educators about renewable energy curriculum. My hope is that it will become a central topic in all schools across our nation. For now, I'm just happy our local district is interested in pursuing the concept.

Renewable energy is our future. Electricity will be the currency of that future. Through Energication and speaking in person to any school who will listen, I am looking forward to helping our students have some "spending money" when they get to the future.

The first effort is to pursue a working solar system and related curriculum through a grant application. You can read more about it on the site.

759 - Martini Bar Visit For My 21 Year Old

I am about to utter words never before exiting my mouth: "Last night, my wife and I took our daughter to a martini bar." Believe me, that feels strange to think about and even worse to see it in pixels.

Last week, daughter Collette celebrated her 21st birthday with three of the best, best friends anyone could ever have. It's like I have four daughters. With an "adult" designated driver deployed, we weren't worried in the slightest. (Well, maybe about a possible hangover, but that didn't materialize either.) Many thanks to the mother of one of her friends, Jenny, for being the "Driving Diva."

Why do I share this?

Because the martini bar realization has now become another milestone on the Retirement Countdown. To use a carpenter analogy, her 21st birthday was like tapping the nail with the hammer to set it. The martini bar was the hammer that drove it in.

Am I getting old? Sure. Collette lovingly jabs me with that statement frequently. It is the maturing and "rights of passage" when kids provide different perspectives to parents. My perspectives continue to change (mostly for the better, thank you!) as the kids, wife Margaret and I "mature." Things that used to be important no longer matter and things that were never a concern before are now vital. Age seems to do that.

763 - Relocation, And It's Not Me

Through the course of this Retirement Countdown journey, my focus has been on the changing aspects of my professional, civic and personal life. All of the things you would expect to change, do, on the path to retirement. They've included health, volunteering, college tuition, a heart attack and more. One thing that has been a solid constant has been children... until now.

I am very pleased to say that the change involving the children is quite positive. Son Jake has been pursuing a position in Seattle. Excellent extension to his own professional journey. Two visits. One offer. Accepted. We could not be more pleased and proud.

However, the point of 763 is that now I'm treading in a topic area of the Retirement Countdown never before visited: the moving of a child away from home.

Sure, they both went to college. One local; the other semi-local. Easy transition for Mom and me. This one is different. Not better. Not worse. Different.

Seattle is only a few hour drive away. Twenty-five minutes between PDX and SEA. Geography is working in our favor. But we get the best of both worlds. First, we are proud parents of a successful child. Secondly, we now have an excellent excuse to head up Interstate 5. It's not that I've never had a reason before - Seattle is a great city and I've grown up enjoying it from time to time. Now, there's a "reason."

This "reason" will satisfy my occasional need for a road trip. But the "reason" will have to be managed. After all, my first born will not be just across town. Sure, I may go weeks without seeing him based on our respective schedules and travel demands, but I know he's in the area. Electronic messaging seems to bridge that short gap. A couple of hundred miles will be a wider gap to which I will adjust. Fortunately, it's for all the right reasons.

What's been your experience with distances between you and kids? All positive, I hope? How have you adjusted or endured, depending on the circumstances? What's your advice?

Sports Tradition, Superstition, and Habit

Wimbledon is probably the most storied and tradition-filled institution in the world of sports. The players, the plays, even the weather have played a major role in creating the aura that surrounds the annual event.

The weather is what is causing the latest stir as it relates to the first-ever retractable roof over Center Court. Countless matches have been delayed or postponed over the years, but weather delays look to be no longer served up. Thanks to a 1,000 ton retractable cover with translucent canvas. As you can imagine, purists aren't pleased.

It appears that even Wimbledon struggles with change. How do you approach your sport? Whether you are a pro, avid amateur, or week-end warrior, everyone has their own traditions, superstitions, and habits. Aspects of our game that must stay the same. But which are they and where do the lines blur between them?

As a hockey player back in the day, I had a very specific way in which put on my gear, stretched, warmed up and took practice shots (I was a goalie.) If you were to ask me then, I'd say, "Well, it's a logical series of steps to prepare for the game." Bull. It was all superstition, with maybe a bit of habit thrown in. The only tradition involved was the fact that I did it that way (habitual superstition) for a long time!

What about you? What quirky... er... I mean... interesting rituals do you practice before any sort of sporting participation?

- Do you wear the same socks when you play tennis because they feel the best, or is there a bit of superstition involved?

- At the golf course, do you hit a bucket of balls before your round to "warm up" or is it more traditional for you?

- When you go for a run, do you listen to the same kind of music each time because it puts you "in the groove" or are you simply a creature of habit?

Father's Day Retrospective

Happy Father's Day to all. If you are a father, then this is obvious. But if you are a wife, mother, sister, or any relation that is a part of the fairer sex, or if you are the child of a father, it is an opportunity to celebrate fathers and look back with them to enjoy fond memories.

My memory is one I keep with me daily - in the form of a fountain pen.

I remember as a child, watching my late father pay the bills. That was a time when the man of the house took care of the financial matters so that the "little lady" didn't have to worry her pretty little head. Let the record show that if I took care of the day to day finances in my home, I'd be a wreck (and so would the finances!) My wife does the "here and now" by taking care of current obligations and I "look to the future" by taking care of the investments. It's a great arrangement in these modern times.

My father was a carpenter and had scarred, tough, beat-up hands. I used to watch those hands create the most elegant and flowing signature when he signed the checks. A signature made possible with a simple Shaeffer fountain pen. A fountain pen that would be my future tie to the past.

Years later (and only a few before he passed away), I happened to ask him if he remembered that pen. He did and said he thought he knew where it was. We went down to the basement and rifled through is his old WWII Army footlocker.

There it was.

I told him of my memory, which took him by surprise - he remembered me hanging around when he paid the bills, but had no idea the impact it had on me. But realizing it then, he immediately made of gift of the pen to me.

That was the genesis of my pen collection.

In my 781 - School Board Farewell Message, I noted the 781 days left to retirement by sharing my final message I delivered at my last Board Meeting. How does this tied together? The gift I received from my fellow Board Members was a fountain pen. They've heard me talk about (and use) special pens for eight years and decided to put their money where my mouth was. I couldn't have been more pleased.

If you are father, congratulations and enjoy your day with family and friends.

If you have, know, remember, or just like to hang around fathers, celebrate the memories they make and tell them how much of an impact they have made on you. They may not know about your version of the fountain pen.

Do it while you can.

Pittsburgh Penguins Claim Stanley Cup

Yes, the tuxedo trimed birds claimed the Stanley Cup on a foreign ice flow, winning the famed 7th game in rival Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. The Pittsburgh Penguins: you have to like a bird that dresses for dinner. How can you not want them to succeed? Didn't you see March of the Penguins?

Stanley Cup Finals; 7th Game; down to the wire: what all hockey players use as a backdrop for street hockey (shinny for you purists) games to build drama.

But the drama is something that most people never experience. I've of course never experienced Stanley Cup success, except for when it came through town a few years ago and was able to visit, touch the names and marvel at its presence. As a long time, but quite "previous" hockey player, I get a chill when I see the cup and experienced a thrill when I got to touch it.

But this accomplishment begs a question: if you have achieved a "championship" in any fashion, do you re-connect to that time when you see a team or individual achieve that milestone? Do you (at least temporarily) live vicariously through them? As someone who has experienced several championships in my youth as a hockey player, I can attest to the fact that there are not may other feelings quite as fulfilling.

What's your experience? Have you achieved "championship" status in any endevor? Was it individual or a team accomplishment? Do you relive it with the same passion when you see current teams do the same?

781 - School Board Farewell Message

After eight years on the Gresham-Barlow School Board, I have finally elected to retire. A difficult decision, but one that is right for me. While it is time to move on, I will deeply miss the work, the kids, and my colleagues.

Last night was the final formal business meeting, of which I have had the honor to lead for the last two years as Board Chair. Kind words, gifts and an occasional "jab" made for an excellent send-off. Knowing there would be an opportunity for some final remarks, I knew the only way I would get through them emotionally was to write them down. I'm glad I did, because I barely held it together while I read them. I share them with you here in hopes that some of my perspectives may resonate with you.

Farewell Message

There is something about the magic of this District that I’m sure all of us inherently feel to some degree, but that I have had a difficult time truly understanding until just recently. I’d like to share with you how that perspective has finally come into focus.

Over the past six months, I have seen at my employer, a number of long-time friends and colleagues retire. While my retirement is still a few years out, it is being on this precipice of a significant change in my professional life that has allowed me to relate it to my work in Gresham-Barlow School District.

This has caused me to observe many similarities between our home lives and our professional and civic activities. For example:

We are frequently working hard to live within our means
We often pack our schedules full in an attempt to do it all
We are sometimes dysfunctional (and you know who your are!)
We take what we do very seriously, but try to have fun doing it
We care about each other
We do it all for our kids
We are a family

Speaking of family, I want to take this opportunity to thank them for giving up 8 years of Thursday nights. Especially my very patient and supportive wife, Margaret. Without her support, I would not have been able to focus on the work at hand.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to be a part of this wonderful family over the last eight years. It is not uncommon for people in my circumstance to announce that they have benefitted exponentially more than they have contributed, but it is so true.

How many people can say that they have worn dorky hats to read Dr. Seuss books to Kindergartners?
And at the other end of the educational spectrum, how many people can say that they have been afforded the honor of handing out high school diplomas and shaking the hands of our graduating seniors?
How many of those can say they got to hand them to their own children?

As I’ve already discussed with the Superintendent, I hope to be involved with some projects going forward, so I am excited about getting to work with you again, only in a different capacity. Until then, I’ll leave you with a few thoughts:

To students: continue making us proud

French Open Tackle

What is it with people? As a recreational tennis player, I of course can't relate to having "fans." However, if this is what fame brings with it, I would just as soon pass it up. (On second thought, it would be fun to explore for a while!!!)

In this video, an idiot tries to put a hat on Roger Federer. He's quick, because it took a few moments for security guards to stop him, but wait until you see the tackle!

I just shake my head. What are people thinking - and what do they think they accomplish when they pull these stunts?

The tackle should have been harder.

JA Biztown Bonanza

In JA Biztown - Kids Conducting Commerce, I was giddy about my experience at the volunteer orientation for Junior Achievement's JA Biztown day. Well, that was today, and giddy isn't anywhere close to explaining my excitement about the program.

Today was a culmination of many weeks of work by three of our local 5th grade classes, who were able to exercise their newfound skills in money management, business operations and a taste of grown-up responsibility.

Kids... er... ah... workers, were given paychecks, asked to make bank deposits, manage their cash and checkbook registers. As employees, they created and distributed invoices, collected payments, made deposits, interacted with retail customers and generally saw how hard it was to "work." (Not my assessment - direct quotes.)

This was the most enjoyable morning I've spent in a very long time.

Biztown is funded in part by naming rights of the companies represented in the "town." (See previous post on the subject for an impressive list.) I've added a "Memorable Merchant" tag to this post as an indicator that not only was the experience memorable, but so is the willingness of the sponsors to support it. 803 - Transitions

Retirement is all about transition - at least a successful one - from one speed to another. Usually that means from an all out, full speed ahead, with all the caffiene possible velocity, to one that is, well, not so much. Over the last few months, a number of long time friends and colleagues have been retiring and it has caused me to resurrect my Retirement Countdown topic.

For those of you who weren't a part of the original series, this began as a result of an accidental discovery that I had (at the time) 2185 days left until I was eligible to retire. Now with just 803 days left until I turn 55, it has simultaneously been a quick journey to this point and one that seems to have taken an eternity.

But, back to transition. Over the years, I've seen many of my friends who have made the successful transition from work to play, have done so by planning well in advance for their new environment. The ones who struggled, didn't plan and didn't know what they were going to do after leaving Day 1, finishing Day 0, then beginning Day +1. They simply drifted.

But planning is the name of the game. It takes effort to shift gears and planning is the way to effect that change. As I've mentioned before, I very much enjoy what I do for a living, so I may not necessarily be in a hurry to change that. However, planning is the key and plans can change. Better to have a plan and change it, than... we'll you get the picture. After 32+ years, it may be time to do something else - something at a different speed. But what?

As 803 quickly diminishes and Day 0 comes onto the horizon, my planning will begin to get more assertive - starting with today. My first task is to ask you:

If you are retired, how did you plan for your transition? Did you do it alone or did you have help? Did you have a lifelone hobby that was screaming to escape, or did you have to find something to fill your time?
If you are not yet retired, how are you planning for your eventual transition? What resources are you using for assistance? Do you feel like it's working or do you need to try another strategy?

Blogging is all about exchanging ideas - that's how we learn and grow. Let's exchange some ideas on the best ways to transition from fast to slower.

Staycation for the Best Vacation Experience

Many people have used, and some have claimed to be the originator of the term "Staycation" as a reference to vacationing close to home. The term is brilliant and the concept is genius.

Are you a "Staycationer?"

This is the first real posting in the new Gresham Blog Topics, but the concept is sound regardless where you live. I was born in nearby Portland and have lived all my life in East County (the last 20 years in Gresham) and I can't tell you how many local attractions I seldom visit and I'm embarrassed to admit how many I've never seen. I suspect I have plenty of company.

But let's change that, shall we?

In addition to this being placed in the Gresham topics, I am starting a new Staycation topic as well. It doesn't matter where you live - there will be opportunities for you to share your perspectives. For example, if you live in the greater Gresham, Oregon area, share your favorite Staycation locations and activities. If you are outside the area, state, or country, please share your strategies, tips, and tricks on how you enjoy vacationing close to home. How do you get the most from your Staycation trips?

Have you hiked the Springwater Trail from Boring (yes, you out-of-towners, that is the real name of a beloved local Gresham neighboring community) to the Willamette River in Portland?

New Blog Topic: Gresham

In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, (Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn) Mark Twain provides the simple, but powerful advice to "Write what you know." Many people have used various forms of this over the years, quoting and mis-quoting, but the sentiment is so strong, it works in any manifestation.

I am trying to heed Mr. Twain's advice.

As you read recently in Let the Games Begin, a friend pointed out that The New Blogged Word simply wasn't getting the attention it deserved. Most of my attention lately has been spent documenting my learning of the blogging world in my other blog called the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit. Since I'm as likely to play against him as I am to play with him in our tennis rotation, I don't want to upset him. So here goes.

To kick off a rejuvenated The New Blogged Word, it would be appropriate to honor Mr. Twain and write about something I know. Based on that, a new topic is being created called "Gresham." But first, an apology.

The analytics I track on visitor profiles shows that visitors to both of my blogs come from all around the world and from all parts of our country - and not just inside the city limits of Gresham, Oregon. For those of you outside the area, please bear with us locals. I pledge to not make this a blog just with Gresham content, although that is a project about which I'm thinking. I will try to pepper my posts with a variety of topics - and some will pertain specifically to Gresham. However, in all cases I will try to offer thought-provoking topics on which anyone from anywhere can weigh in.

I have a number of topics up my sleeve and will share them over time. But for now, I'd like some input from local Gresham residents (sorry you out-of-towners.) On which topics do you want to engage in conversation? Are there issues begging for a debate? Are there matters that need more attention brought to them?

Suggest what you know; I'll write about what I know; we can debate about what everyone knows.

JA Biztown: Kids Conducting Commerce

After eight years on the School Board, I finally have an opportunity to participate in Junior Achievement's "JA Biztown." This is an area of curriculum provided to schools that culminates in a field trip "simulation" at the Junior Achievement facility.

"Simulation" is used to describe the event since it allows 5th grade students to use their new skills in writing checks, making deposits, updating check registers, issuing invoices and much, much more. All of this in the simulated environment of a small town square.

Local Portland area merchants and companies support the program by lending their names (and I'm sure some resources) to help make this happen. From their web site, the Partners are:

Let the Games Begin

A good friend and tennis buddy today suggested that The New Blogged Word was getting a bit long in the tooth. He parted my hair about following the Bathroom Remodel and then not much has happened except for changing to the new URL.

He's right.

I tried to explain that the newest blog, the Ultimate Blogging Toolkit, was intended to be my way of documenting what I'm learning about blogging. A more serious look. Also, that The New Blogged Word was meant to be a not-so-serious look at blog topics. I know. Lame excuse. He was still right.

So, in the spirit of rightfully having my hair parted, I pledge to keep both The New Blogged Word fresh with a fun look at topics and The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit updated with all the tips and tricks I learn as I continue to blog.

But there's a return to every serve. (Get it? Tennis reference?) If I keep serving up oddball topics of discussion, I expect the multitude of dedicated followers to weigh in with comments - and you both know who you are!

Entrecard Builds Relationships

H1N1 Is Everybody’s Business

On the surface, the H1N1 Virus doesn’t have anything to do with advancing the art of blogging. But as an issue that does potentially affect every person on this planet, it does by default, affect us bloggers. I don’t normally react in “knee-jerk” fashion to issues. My responses are usually calculated and logical (although not always!). My hope that in this case, logic continues to prevail.

Notice the new widget I just placed on the right panel. With links to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), PandemicFlu.gov and theWorld Health Organization, this is an easy way for me to do my part to keep this serious issue at the top of mind for all of us. It is important for all of us to be vigilant in our efforts to stem the spread of this disease. Like Mom said, “wash your hands, cover your mouth and go to the doctor if you’re sick.”

Go With What Got You There

Any athlete, professional or amateur, who has been involved in any sort of playoff setting knows what this post's title means. The strategies, experiences and successes (and failures for that matter!) all were factors in getting you there. Once at the big dance, you continue to use tools that were successful.

Enter The New Blogged Word. For those of you who followed The Blogged Word, the reason for the move was to simply organize Google accounts. But there's more to it. While The Blogged Word was my first foray into blogging and one that provided significant perspectives, it also was a springboard. The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit was born from that experience.

The "Kit" became formal. It's own URL, paid hosting, and experience with the new platform of WordPress. It has been a very interesting journey. It allows me to capture those things I'm learning (like URLs, hosting, WordPress, etc.) and share with others. The tag line is, "Blogging Tips and Resources for the Average Blogger." That's me. Just sharing my experiences.

But why is The New Blogged Word still being fed? Remember the title? WordPress is a very dynamic and feature rich environment, but Blogger is what got me there. It's not the first time someone kept two blogs. (I would suspect it's less work and more cost-effective than keeping two wives!) My challenge of course is to do each one justice. Here's how I'll approach that:

The Ultimate Blogging Toolkit will continue to house those nuggets of knowledge gained through this new passion called blogging. Let's consider that the "educational sandbox" in which we play.
The New Blogged Word will allow me to get back to the basics - talking about anything and everything. In a narrow way, that is what was done with the original topics of the Bathroom Remodel, Memorable Merchants, and the Retirement Countdown. Consider that just the beginning.

Although the bathroom is done, retirement might be extended since the old 401(k) is more like a 201(k), and area merchants who perform well will always be in favor. If the Kit is a place for business with some humor, the Word will be light-hearted business.

Pick your poison.

939 - A New Year and a New Perspective

Historically, a new year brings resolutions, new ambitions and the usual "fresh start." However, in a longer time horizon view like the Retirement Countdown, the new perspectives are simply constantly evolving versions.

For example, family.

With the loss of an uncle recently (actually a cousin once removed, but more like an uncle than a cousin), it gave me cause to consider that our time here is finite. At the risk of getting too focused on our own mortality, it is important to remember that our world won't stay the same forever. As fast-paced as that world around us operates, it's easy to lose sight of that fact. Don't squander time with family. Enjoy that time like it won't last forever - because it won't.

This is true for work as well. Now, I'd be the first to admit that at this point of my career (hey, after all, I'm writing a blog about counting down to retirement!), I am not going to frantically try to climb the corporate ladder. But what I will admit is a realization that although in previous posts, I've landed my dream job, this is a great reminder that I can work smarter (and maybe just a bit harder!)

The next position may or may not ever materialize. However, the passing of a dear family member has reminded me that time, too, passes. I intend to use it wisely - with family and to capture any possible professional opportunities that may exist for me.

The Shower Transformation

Last, but not least. In fact, in spite of the shower having the least of the structural transformation, it has garnered most of the photos. Here are five that capture the essence of the change.

The shower seemed to have the most discreet steps. Not in the sense of dragging down the rest of the project, but rather, the complexity of what needed to be accomplished. Recall the significant effort to build the shower pan. Many steps were involved from here:

Then, the tile. Cutting, fitting, placing the spacers, realigning, grouting... It seemed as if it wouldn't end.
But end it did - and in a glorious way! The shower door was like icing on the cake.

The Bathroom Remodel has been a great project. Made possible by significant planning (with proper adjustments), careful decision making, a persnickety contractor, and a TON OF LUCK!

The Vanity Transformation

While new tile and granite are an exciting aspect of this project, it is the vanity that actually incurred the most change. Recall that the previous owner had the original second sink removed in favor of this drop-top vanity area. Bad news: we needed to change that. Good news, the plumbing was already in the wall!

Of course, demolition played a significant part of the change - as it did for the rest of the room. Here, the old sink was removed along with the entire countertop to make room for the additional cabinet and sink.

Once the new cabinet and base for the countertop were added, the overall structure was ready for the true transformation.

Granite countertop and backslash! Notice the pre-cut areas. Not much room for error. Everything had to be exact (or at least damn close!) for it all to come together.

Note the power outlet on the backsplash. In the original photo, it appears lower and more to the right. Through a clever bit of engineering, Tom moved it to the left and up to gain adequate clearance from the sink. Clever, you ask? How it that clever?

Well, there was a triple-thickness set of 2x4 studs in the way and not much slack in the electrical wire with which to work. He cut a shallow channel through the studs, keeping their structural integrity, allowing the outlet to be mounted on the other side. Then, to prevent any sheetrock nails from becoming rude with the wire, he attached a steel plate across the channel to protect them. No expensive wiring changes, no damage, no danger, no hits, no runs, no errors. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

At Last!

In Etta James' song, At Last she uses a phrase that, with some license, works for us at the completion of this project. She sings, "A dream that I can call my own." For us, it's simply the plural variant indicating "our" dream.

In these next few posts, I'll show a sequence of various views, providing some indication of the transformation that has just taken place. The final product is wonderful, but it is the transformation that has impressed and given us the daily "wow" factor.

As we went from what was quite familiar, to demolition, and then to the rebuilding, the dream truly was coming into view.

As the finished product started to come into view, the excitement grew for two reasons. One, for sure, was that we were to get our bathroom, a new and improved version, back. But secondly, to see just how close the final product would match "our dream."

It is hard to believe it is the same space. A second sink, more usable cabinet space, a larger shower and considerably upgraded surroundings - all in the same footprint. An efficient project, based on the early La La Land expectations we held at the beginning. Money well spent, for an appropriate level of benefit. A combination of reality and choosing the right contractor.

Starbucks at Gresham Safeway

It's often said that it's one thing that brings you in to a merchant, but it is something else (sometimes many things) that keeps you coming back.

I'm a frequent flier, so I have the affinity program gene. If I can get points or some sort of credit for a purchase, I will. Tying my United Airlines Mileage Plus program to my Safeway Club Card made a lot of sense to maximize the benefits of my daily Starbucks fix. Sure, Starbucks has their own program now, but I don't want to pay $25 per year for a Starbucks Gold Card. So, Safeway it is.

If my need for "loyal customer" points brought me in (way back when), it is the service that keeps me coming back. Two stories are needed to explain why. First, Jalyssa.

When my wife Margaret noticed a particular mug style being sold on the retail shelves, and we did not snatch them up at the time, Jalyssa came to the rescue. When we finally decided to buy them, they were of course, gone. On one of my regular morning visits, I asked if they had any "in the back." Nope. Jalyssa and I kept our eyes peeled for new ones if they came in. Very much like Costco - you just never know what comes through the retail channel.

After some time passed, Jalyssa took it upon herself to shop the Sandy, OR store and found them! Not only did she find them, she bought them with her own money. My next morning visit found Jalyssa handing over the prize. Not only did I reimburse her, but I crafted a letter to Starbucks letting them know the "over the top" service received.

There are two ways in which I appreciate and respond to service. One is in going far above and beyond basic responsibilities. The other is the day in and day out, steady, trusted, and now anticipated "attitude." Most times, "attitude" is connoted negatively. Here, "attitude" is a sense of pleasant demeanor, compentence and energy. Enter Angela.

When Angela arrived some time ago, I could tell she was different than the rest of the people who are sometimes there for only a short time. (You either get it or you don't.) She got it. Soon, she was training others. Then, she became the assistant manager.

When you take care of customers - and train your employees to do the same - a culture of customer appreciation - and appreciative customers - develops. Sure, there isn't the Starbucks "ambiance" there that comes with a regular store with couches, chairs and cool music, but my Safeway Starbucks has all the comfort that should come with a $3.00+ cup of coffee. Angela simply packages it differently.

End of the End (Almost)

This marks the end of the "construction" photos. The final bits of touch-up and details.

Here's a first and only look at the windows above the mirror. Simply a good opportunity to touch up some trim that was in marginal shape.

A final look at that backsplash area that had some challenges, solved by artistic sheetrock mud, texturing and paint. You'd never know.

Standing in the tub (something I don't often do,) this shows a variety of details: caulking around backsplash, trim tile on tub against cabinet, accent tiles around tub deck and a placed, sealed and plumbed sink.

I'll leave you with a tease for the rest of the cabinets. The drawers are in, but the doors are next on the agenda. This is a great shot of an audible we had to call midway through. Notice the new cabinet/sink on the right: no vertical piece. Existing cabinet on the left: yes vertical piece. In the nine plus years since our home was built, they changed the cabinet style. Sure, same manufacturer since we were able to contact the developer and ask for some information. But a different style.

Solution: new doors on each side so they match. Previously, the left side (originally, the only cabinet) had doors that came together with about a 1/2 inch space. No problem, since there is the vertical piece. The doors on the new cabinet close up tight to one another, since there is no vertical piece. The new doors on the old cabinet now close like the new ones on the right. No one knows except us (and you of course!), unless both sets of doors are opened simultaneously.

If you're tired of the left/right/left/right description above, I apologize for the tennis match play by play.

The last posts coming next will finish out this project with a final, "pre-shower door" view and then a tour of our new master bathroom.

983 - Changing Professional Perspectives

My Retirement Countdown continues to be a transformational, professional journey. When the countdown started, I was in an environment of hard work, positioning for that next promotion, seeking and taking advantage of opportunities - the typical professional ladder climbing attitude.

Then, in 1588, I talked about landing my dream position. While the hard work part is still a daily part of my life, the posturing for that next position (at least for now since I love what I do) isn't quite as important. In case my boss reads this, I of course would entertain any opportunity to grow - it's just not a high priority right now.

But professional perspectives can change for many reasons.

Many of you know son Jake has been a producer for Good Day Oregon at KPTV Fox 12. Recently, he was asked to help initiate the new 8:00 PM news program on sister station, PDXTV. Having your son sought after for a specific position is pretty cool. But the suspender snapper for me was when he told us he is now the producer for Fox 12's 10 O'Clock News. This is a significant show of faith in his abilities and we are very proud.

My reason for the story is not to brag about my kid (well, maybe just a little), but instead to make a point. As parents, we all take pride in our children's accomplishments in school, but we keep focusing on our own careers and that next jump on the ladder. However, when our children's accomplishments begin to take place in their "profession," well... it has altered my professional perspective forever. A leap-frogging of importance has just taken place.

Yes, the rest of my career is still very, very important to me. But, it pales in comparison to the importance (and remember: PRIDE!) I now feel for the accomplishments he is enjoying in his profession.

Middle of the End

Trim, paint and hardward make a world of difference. First, tiles were cut into strips to make the edge trim. Then, a small square piece was cut at an angle across one corner. Finally, paint pulled it all together.

These final touches are subtle, but oh so defining. They mark the migration from work to play.

Remember the niche? It took vision, design, engineering, testing, manufacturing, and even finish detailing. Sounds like we're building a truck, doesn't it? After all that work, it is the wash cloth rod that makes me smile. I have successfully avoided Margaret's repeated suggestions to ditch the messy wash cloth in favor of her poofy scrubber thing. Nope.

Not many steps remain. Baseboards, tub faucet, final paint touch-up. When those are complete, the shower door goes in. We're almost there.

Beginning of the End

For weeks, we've been excited about the buzz of activity around here. Prior to that, it was all about the hunt; the hunt to find the right person to transform our space; the hunt for the right materials; the hunt for the right accessories. That hunt was successful, (the end of the beginning!), we got our buzz, and now beginning to see the end of the process. Bitter/sweet. It has not been torture, but rather a slight inconvenience at the bottom end, and intensely satisfying and rewarding at the top end.

As this post's title suggests, there won't be too many blog posts remaining. A few more to wrap up the construction, then one with the shower door installed, and finally - the completed look. I may throw a few "transformational" photo sequences in there for good measure. I so enjoyed "Fun With Before and After" that it might be interesting to devote a few posts to before/during/after shots.

You've probably noticed that I'm halfway through this post and I haven't mentioned any of these photos yet. That's because we've arrived at a point where there's not much "action." A quick point about the base pieces installed on the cabinets' kick plates: each small finishing touch adds a great deal, but yes, not much else is happening. The grout's down and we're waiting for it to cure so the sealer can be installed. Just like a dog who can't quite get to his bone...

The hinges sitting on the tub deck above play into the final picture, so don't go to sleep on me quite yet. Remember the access hatch cut into the tub deck frame?

Well, we now have a beautiful new Lucent Blue door! Don't you love the color? Right. It's all the rage just like the grout treatment previously. Of course not. Simply a protective coating. But we now have a matching cabinet door (really, it's white!), newly engineered to allow easy access to the valves. Look closely, and you'll see the same old handles, one installed backward, waiting for the new set. Stay tuned.

It's been an amazing transformation, but the best is yet to come.

Molly Lee Cards

If you ever have the need for the most unique, personally designed cards for a special occasion, this is the only place to go. Molly Lee sells interactive cards on her Etsy site, which is a cornucopia of handmade items.

When we moved to our new home, Molly designed a housewarming card that had all the look and feel of a moving box. Complete with a packing tape seal, when opened, the envelope unfolded like the top of a box. Removing the invitation was like unpacking. I can't tell you how much fun we had sending them - and how many enjoyable comments we received from guests. I only wish I'd kept a sample for myself.

Creativity, talent and oh, yeah - customer service! For all occasions that need that special flair, I'm simply going to give her the theme and let her create the perfect piece!

Grout Everywhere!

Wow! Isn't this great? Tom says this effect is all the rage! Ahh... no. Grout is a bit of a messy animal. Fortunately, for people who know how to work with it, it sure cleans up nice. What's the adage? Something about breaking some eggs to make an omelet?

It is amazing just how much of a difference some well-placed goo makes when the right color is selected and applied by someone with skill.

The best way to see the impact of the grout in any of these photos is to click on a picture and see a zoomed version. The detail is impressive. You should see it in person. For those of you who can, you have an open invitation.

From a distance (these photos), not a lot seems to change on a daily basis. I have to admit, I've been challenged trying to select photos that show some progress. Progress is taking place each day - a significant amount - but without being up close, it's hard to see the details (click to zoom.)

Here's one that comes with an apology. Sorry, Tom. I couldn't resist capturing a shot of the guy who's making this transformation take place. Thanks, Captain Grout!

Fun With Before and After

It's not clear if Dick and Jane would have fun with this, but I think this is fascinating. No, not the fact that I figured out how to use the MACRO setting on my camera, but that the grout makes such a dramatic difference in the project.

In the before state, the tiles are aligned, affixed and admired:

In the after, they are surfaced, smoothed and sensational!

Next is a more completed look at the furnace vent. In Turning the Corner with Tile, I stressed the importance of tile placement planning to ensure all the right edges were in all the right places. In that post, it was a picture of a roughed-in opening for the vent template without even a tile set in place. Here, you can see the tile carefully cut to accommodate the template.

But wait, there's more! Notice the individual pieces cut to fit across the vent. Again, plenty of art on Tom's part to go with the science.

And here is the final piece, grouted and looking as if it was easy. The mark of a craftsman.

With the grout down, the remaining work is to pull all the remaining puzzle pieces together. We are beginning to accelerate to the finish. Even Dick and Jane would have fun.

Sanks for zee Sinks

This was one of the many defining moments for this project. Going from a cutout to having the sinks and faucets installed, all in one day, was a thrill. We were a bit nervous anticipating how our "square sink" selection was going to work, but I'm thinking we make a good choice.

No, the Bosch Power Box is not part of our design, but I now want one. Once connected to power, it provides a good sounding radio and CD, extra outlets, and probably a lot more gadgets than what I've been able to discover from snooping.

Ah, the square sink. Since it is a bit larger than we anticipated, there is not much clearance between the back of the sink and the backsplash. Fortunately, it fit just fine - just closer than we envisioned.

And a final look at how it seats to the granite.

This confirms the end of the project is indeed in sight. More to go, but grateful for where we are today.

The Devil is in the Details

Details.

The visible part of any project, as opposed to the underlying structure, is what gives it the excitement. Of course in a construction project, the strength and quality of the unseen structure (the bacon) is equally as important, but it is what you see (the sizzle) that seems to matter. The sizzle has indeed begun.

The tub has been getting considerable attention due to it's own special needs. A new access door, a lot of trim work, and a completely new valve set. (Hence the need for an access door.) Notice again the screwy handles, one of which is installed backward. The tub has it's own set of details that is making it sizzle. Below, you see more of the artistic work to feather the sheetrock mud out to meet the tile. Yes, another wall that wasn't... well... perfect... when it was built.

But perfection is in sight.

Next, is a nice "during and after" shot. In "But Wait, Don't Take the Counter for Granite," (I just love that pun), I showed the "before" shot showing a gap from a straight piece of granite to a not-so-straight piece of wall. Here, the sheetrock mud has been built up to meet the granite and feathered widely to that any sort of slope is imperceptible.

Next, you can see how it looks with the wall textured, painted, and caulked. Sizzle that supports the bacon.

At this stage of the project, there is a lot happening - quickly. There may be more opportunities to show a progression of photos. The before, during and after perspectives should be a lot of fun and will be a great way to see how it is all coming together.

989 - Last in a Series

With 989 days to go, it is still somewhat premature to begin looking at the last day of work, or the last annual review, or any sort of final events. However, it has occurred to me that I am today experiencing a "last" before a certain retirement - from the school board.

As a school board member for 8 years (currently in the last year of my second, four-year elected term and have chosen not to run again), I have participated in many professional development opportunities related to public education. This week-end is the Oregon School Boards Association annual convention. School boards and education service districts from around the state get together annually to learn about trends in education, hear about best practices in a variety of areas and forge colleagial bonds with fellow board members from across Oregon.

And this is my last one.

This is somewhat sobering in that it is an example of many "lasts" I'll be experiencing as I get closer to retirement. Some lasts will be a relief, but most will be a need for a reluctant good bye. This week-end has put me on notice that it is time to celebrate areas of life as if they will be the last time to enjoy them. Not meaning to sound morbid, but isn't that how we should enjoy life anyway?

Nameless Contractors No More

It has occurred to me that through this entire project, I have consistently called Tom and Jeff our "contractors" in my blog postings. Maybe subconsciously, I didn't want the world to know that I had screwed up on my choice, in the event they didn't work out. Boy, that couldn't be any farther from the truth.

As I'm sure you've read by now, we've been extremely pleased with our choice. Not just because of the early firings of the other candidates, but the consistent manner in which Tom and Jeff have added to our confidence through open communication and thoughtful actions. You've already read about that - no need to go into it further. The point is that in this particular case, there wasn't any screw up on my part. Collette, this is for you: "No reading on the Bozometer Scale!"

It is high time these guys get a name and not just a title. They have already had conversations with some friends in the neighborhood, but I can't resist promoting their work further. I'm tagging this in Memorable Merchants since they more than qualify. In Memorable Merchants, I generally write a bit about why I'm pleased, but you know where you can find those comments. If you are considering any sort of work around your home, do yourself a favor and call Tom at 360.772.1540. Don't risk a reading on the Bozometer Scale.

Jig-Saw Puzzle: Do You Start Around the Edges?

In the very first Bathroom Remodel post, "Welcome to the Bathroom Remodel," I cited a line from Alice and Wonderland. "Start at the beginning... and when you come to the end, STOP."

The shower pan calls for a slightly different strategy. Starting a jig-saw puzzle around the edge is as universal as dunking an Oreo. OK, for you connoisseurs out there, I'll mention twisting it and eating the middle. But I digress. Instead of stopping at the end, I think we'll stop at the middle.

Here, planning is what it's all about. Pencil lines and initial tile cuts give some dimension.

Then, continuing to piece together the ultimate puzzle causes the final image to begin to come through.

There are two other items that merit a mention. First, never underestimate the value of blue painter's tape. It is inexpensive, can be removed easily and does a great job of holding tile in place long enough to allow the mud to set.

Secondly, here's a look at the trim pieces, cut from full tiles. The edges are rounded in the familiar bull nose manner, giving them a very nice finished appearance.

In the spirit of full disclosure, many of the trim pieces are additional pieces of tile our contractor had to "acquire." You see, we ran out. And when we checked with the supplier, the source had run out. In our contractor's defense, it was I who guesstimated the amount we would need when measuring to finalize the order. Rookie error: I didn't plan for the extra tiles needed due to the waste that comes with the diamond pattern in the shower.

Pulling in markers is another art. Our contractor went to one of his regular suppliers and not only got a few pieces that were plenty close enough in color and pattern, but he (we) didn't have to pay for them. They just comp'd him. It gets better: one of the pieces was ripped from a sample display board. I just wish I could claim this as a strategic move to keep our costs down. I know: Bravo-Sierra.

But Wait, Don't Take the Counter for Granite!

OK, so I took a bit of license with that one, but we can't take the granite for granted. With all the focus on the tile, and all the beauty it has been holding, the granite is like the frosting.

Backsplash is in and the sinks are ready to be cut out. (Yes, my challenging and inconsistent lighting is still with us.) Look carefully at the differences in thickness between where the sink will be cut out and the bull nose edge.

To provide the appearance of a thicker piece of granite, the front edge is rounded and then a small piece is laminated on the underside. Don't ask me! It must be magic glue, special cutting, voodoo - I have no idea how they do it. The slab is plenty stout at the actual thickness, but this effect gives the appearance of a much thicker piece. I call it "visual value."

The photos above and below are great examples of how the finish work will bring it all together. Above, this is another example of existing walls not being what you could call plumb and set at 90 degrees. Notice the gap between the countertop and backsplash edges and that of the wall. The pieces were cut exactly 90 degrees, but the wall didn't want to cooperate.

My late father was a carpenter and his forte was finish work. The part you see, and in particular, the part you see that ties pieces together, is what makes or breaks a project.

The great equalizers: sheetrock mud, a can of texture and an artistic eye. More on those later.

The Tile-Saw Puzzle Begins!

If you've ever worked a jig-saw puzzle, you know that the pieces must be placed together exactly so to create your masterpiece. Here, the artisans are using a tile saw (not elegant, but very cool), to create the intricate and precise pieces that are causing this puzzle to take shape.

In Turning the Corner with Tile, I hinted at the cascading effect of moving one piece. Look closely below at the precision needed to keep all lines straight. There's the tile spacers, the sticks of wood acting as braces up and down the edge, and there's even that little red shim used to get the spacing exact. Now think about doing that on a vertical surface, with adhesive mud backing the tile, with many sizes and shapes -- and -- not offering four letter words in front of the homeowner. Very impressive.

Our niche is one of the more interesting creations. Since we couldn't find the style and size we wanted in a prefabricated unit, we decided to design our own. (With our contractors' help, naturally.) Remember, this is the place for shampoo and other bottles, a soap dish and a wash cloth (when the bar is installed.)

But the most intricate of the entire process will be the floor. It's not vertical, but it does hold four unique planes, draining to the center, that must have lines, slopes and patterns align perfectly. Not for me... Check Please!

One more level of detail that might seem insignificant, but is equally as important: keeping track of the baseboard trim pieces so they can be touched up and reinstalled. By replacing only those pieces that can not (and should not) be repaired, we are saving considerable money. The final product will look just as good - but without buying, prepping, and painting a fairly detailed molding.

I've always said that when a final product looks flawless on the surface, it's a signal that considerable planning and execution went into it. We're seeing that unfold daily with a great deal of detail work being invested that is beginning to hint at what I expect to be a very spectacular finished puzzle.

The Shower as a Continuing Science/Art Project

Tile may have been the corner-turner in the last post, but it is the shower stall that will be the jigsaw puzzle. How hard can it be to put tile down on a big, flat floor? (Remember, if it was easy, I'd be doing it!) The shower is a complex space with slopes and multiple surfaces that must all work together.

The first step of course, is to get it covered up. With the sheetrock on the walls, it is beginning to take shape. The niche has been defined and the increased depth is beginning to become obvious.

From this angle, the two thicknesses of 2x4s is clearly shown. Previously, the wall went just to the edge of the painted area. It doesn't seem like much, but it will be a great enhancement.

Oh, yeah. The toilet is still in the garage...

The shower will continue to be the focal point for several more days. Plan, measure, cut, fit, adjust, glue, adjust again... you get the idea. Art or science? It's anybody's guess!

995 - A Significant Move into a"3-digit" World

This whole Retirement Countdown exercise has been an interesting look into the path leading to what I call Career 2.0 and all that that implies. The countdown to something called retirement is truly a journey and not a destination. The 2.0 part of this simply indicates the expectation of the next chapter - whatever that will be and whenever it will happen. Until now, it has been somewhat virtual - a journey starting at 2185 days away - much too far to seem very real.

That seems to be changing with a 3-digit countdown.

995 days seems like a significantly shorter time than the 1038 of the last post on the topic, but it is just more than one month difference. By focusing more on the Bathroom Remodel recently, I've lost a bit of perspective toward the countdown. 995 is causing a sobering realization that time seems to be accelerating. Even a short period of taking my eye off the ball can cause a dramatic fielding error.

So what does that mean? Initially, it means, "pay attention!" The pace at which life is moving and as it continues to accelerate means that nothing is to be taken for granted. Be present. Enjoy each and every moment. There are only a finite number of them, and there isn't a second chance. It's ironic that in 1123 - A Dubious Milestone, I reflect more on healthy habits than on appreciating the present. Each one is important, but an oversight for sure. I'm just grateful that a silly retirement countdown exercise reminded me to smell those roses.

But beyond that, I'm finding that I don't sweat some of the small things that I used to fret over. In other situations, I'm more passionate and defensive about issues than I ever used to be. As stimuli change, I suspect, so do perspectives.

995 has performed better than any hotel wake-up call could. It has caused me to awaken in ways I've never previously experienced, but more importantly, it has caused me to pay closer attention to frame after individual frame of life's movie - one for which there is no sequel.

Professional Towing

When thinking of automotive towing services, the word "professional" doesn't always come. In this case, it's more than the company's name, it is the best word to describe them.

Cars can from time to time get sick and shouldn't be driven to have them repaired. It's never a good time when the unexpected happens, so you simply deal with it and move on.

After making a couple of calls from a random internet search, I was quickly thinking that I would have to wait up to 2 hours and deal with a company that just didn't sound like they cared about booking my business. Thankfully, I made one more call.

When I reached a professional voice at the other end, who seemed to care by asking the reason for the tow, then empathized with the situation - and - could get there in 30-45 minutes, I was in. Rich at "Pro Tow" is the new owner, buying the business from the long-time, previous owner. Customer care: he gets it.

A truck was dispatched and he said the driver would call me back when he was in the area. One better: Rich called back personally when the truck was about "a minute and a half" away. Sure enough, 90 seconds later, here comes the truck.

Eric was the driver and quite a character. Careful, quick, and a lot of fun to be around. I rode with him and had a good time talking about "big trucks."

If you need a tow, don't bother shopping. Look to Pro Tow for professional treatment and at much more of a reasonable rate than I anticpated.

Turning the Corner with Tile

In any sort of project, there comes a point at which the final outcome starts to be visible. While there is still much to do, having the tile down on the floor helps a visually oriented person like me really begin to see how it might look when finished.

Notice the access door under the tub. A new feature. In the very first post, "Welcome to the Bathroom Remodel!," I showed a photo of the tub faucet and one of the valves installed backward. Since this access door did not exist before, the faucet must have been installed and then the tub framing fully enclosed. There's no other way to get to the faucet. Again, some of the things that are discovered when exposing previous construction techniques.

The plan is to mount a matching cabinet door over the opening to provide access to the plumbing. Something that should have been incorporated before.

It is indeed beginning to take shape.

I love this next shot. This is a great example of the tile detail, but it also is a glimpse into the care that our contractors are taking with the tile installation. It's all about straight lines. The spacer clips provide for consistent spacing, but think about the dozens and dozens of tiles that make up the complete "system." If one is moved to line it up with the one next to it on one side, it can affect the one on the other side. And so on, and so on, and so on... This is the heart of the art.

Here, science meets art head on. A significant decision had to be made before the first tile was put down: where would the pattern start? Some of the considerations were visial impact (see the top photo as it looks when entering the bathroom), where cuts would be needed around the perimeter, and of course, the furnace vent. Better to have a complete tile surround the vent than to have a break (and grout), dissect it.

This one tile will be the source of considerable work (relatively) due to the tile-friendly register that we've ordered. This isn't bad, just a fair amount of detail. Later, you'll see why the tile pattern needed to be just so. The register will incorporate the tile beautifully and in a very clever way.
